Hand Sanitiser – What I Love About It

This Hand Sanitiser is made by me – Lucinda Curran. The reason I decided to make this product is because there seems to be none available and I wanted to make sure that there was a quality product available.

The main ingredient is ethanol – which is alcohol. It is the primary ingredient for killing germs, the essential oils play a support role.

Alcohol can be very drying, so I have added glycerine to the mix to counter this effect – we want to keep our skin intact as it is a barrier to infections.

As I have said time and time again, I am NOT an aromatherapist but have been using them since 1988 and have done a lot of training in this area.

One of my “essential oil gurus” is Salvatore Battaglia (“Perfect Potion”and author of many text books used for aromatherapy) IS an aromatherapist and a leader in the field. Recently he shared a post discussing the different essential oils that are useful for viruses, with an emphasis on coronavirus. Having reviewed the research he presented, and trusting his knowledge, insight and skills I have based my essential oil selection on what he presented.

Good Hygiene and the Role of Hand Sanitiser

Battaglia (2020) points out in his post that:

As with all respiratory viruses, there are many simple preventative actions one can take. Most government and medical agencies such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention provide us with practical and simple measures to prevent the spread and risk of infection. This includes: Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and then throw the tissue in the rubbish bin.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

If you aren’t sure on the best way to wash your hands, let’s face it, unless you work in childcare or health industries, it is unlikely that you have been taught to do this – here is a graphic from WHO.

What Is In It?

This is a 50 mL blue glass bottle with a spray nozzle.

It contains ethanol (70%), purified water and glycerine as a base with essential oils of certified organic Eucalyptus Blue Mallee, certified organicTea Tree, Calabrian Bergamot and Lemon.

I have followed the recommendations that Salvatore Battaglia (one of the founding fathers of aromatherapy in Australia) shared in his post about Influenza Viruses. You can read it here.

FRAGRANCE FREE OPTION contains ethanol (60%), purified water and glycerine.

How To Use Your Hand Sanitiser

Spray it onto your hands and then rub together until dry.

Note (from a super precautionary standpoint): it contains citrus essential oils (bergamot and lemon) which can potentially cause skin to discolour when exposed to the sun. At the proportions they are included in this product, I would think it highly unlikely to be an issue.

Other Items to Consider

If you are going to busy places (such as shopping centres and airports) I also recommend wearing a mask, such as the Honeycomb Mask or the Organic Cotton Bamboo Carbon Mask.

The AntiViral Spray is useful in rooms and for surfaces.

As well, Air Purifiers can be super helpful, especially in a workplace.
